Inspired by Chris McVeigh's awesome Brick Sketches, I attempted my own LEGO portrait of Abraham Lincoln. Mine's pretty crummy, so I'd actually love to see what a real master of the medium could do with this subject.

Hey, this awesome LEGO build only needs another 130 votes before it will have the 10,000 votes it needs to get the LEGO Corp. to officially review it as a potential new set to be offered through LEGO stores and online. If you don't already have a LEGO Ideas account, sign up...it's free and quick.

This is an amazing architectural build over on LEGO Ideas: the Modular Library.

This is an amazing architectural build over on LEGO Ideas:  the Modular Library. It's called "Modular" because it scales with the other buildings in LEGO's "Modular" series. It has a removable roof and three stackable floors, all connected by stairs. It's just gorgeous inside and out.

I have to admit that a tiny part of me wants the effects of global warming to happen soon and be really dramatic.

I have to admit that a tiny part of me wants the effects of global warming to happen soon and be really dramatic. I realize that millions will die and humanity will be forever changed, but being able to point at the devastation and say "SEE?!?!" to the climate-change deniers might be worth it.

And yes, that's snarkasm.

One difference between "weather" and "climate" is the timeframes involved.

One difference between "weather" and "climate" is the timeframes involved. If you were to only look back at the last 5 or 6 years, you possibly could draw the incorrect conclusion that that arctic sea ice coverage is rebounding and just very volatile. In fact, if you look at it from a longer time scale -- decades, required for understanding climate -- you'd realize that, even though last year was higher than the last couple of years, it's still MUCH lower than historical levels. That degree of change, or the downward slope of that line, is crazy steep. Good for shipping companies in the short run, bad for everyone in the long run.

SOME LEGO WEAPONS

SOME LEGO WEAPONS
And yet we are surprised when little kids bring real weapons to school to show their friends.

Update (from a comment): Just to be clear, I'm not blaming LEGO, or any toymaker, as the cause of kids bringing weapons to school. In my mind, this is just a clear reflection of a violence-obsessed culture. When toys designed for 7-year-olds incorporate this much violence on purpose -- this isn't the case where kids are taking generic rods and using them as swords...these are specifically, and can really only be viewed as, weapons -- it strikes me that we shouldn't be so surprised that a certain percentage of children are going to internalize that message in ways that create potentially dangerous situations for others.

Spent part of today with the kids sorting some of our LEGO bricks to go into a bin organizer (a repurposed garage hardware drawer job) to make finding those specialty parts a little easier. Not the funnest task, but looking forward to easier future builds.

Happy #EarthDay !

This is the day to remember that we live on a living, breathing planet. We are part of the web of life, and have a moral obligation to protect it instead of attacking it. This means taking bold, direct action to stop the environmental catastrophes we are creating: deforestation, desertification, ocean acidification, Climate Change, wildlife habitat loss, and worst of all the 6th Great Extinction event.

We only have one Spaceship Earth, and I love every bit of it, from it's spinning molten core to the hydrosphere to the magnetic shield that protects us. We are living, thinking pieces of the place (the biosphere), so take a moment today to honor that and commit to protecting our world.

Newspapers giving distributors of misinformation like Will half a page each week further reinforces their increasing irrelevance.

Took our kids to The LEGO Movie yesterday and it was fantastic. Both kids and both parents loved it. Our kids couldn't sit through "Brave" because it was too scary, so this film is definitely kid safe. And there's enough grown-up jokes to keep the adults happy, too. Definitely RECOMMENDED.

Behold the very first of Lego Simpsons sets! Uncovered by Eurobricks user Carlos S, there are no details about it except what we can see on the box: 2523 pieces, six minifigs including the full Family plus Flanders. It looks really fantastic and detailed and - apparently - it even opens.
