I got a standing desk at work last June.

I got a standing desk at work last June. I purchased it because I figured I could raise it up when I felt like taking a little break from sitting. I anticipated having it in the raised position maybe 10% of the time.

Well, I was completely wrong in my expectation about how I'd use it. Now, nine months later, the desk is in the raised position about 85% of the time. When I'm working by myself, it's almost always standing up. When I have meetings in my office, we all sit, so I lower it. There are also times when I'm doing something that requires ultra-intense concentration, and I will sometimes sit for that work. But, my colleagues often mention that they hardly ever see me sitting at my desk anymore. I've actually considered getting rid of my desk chair (I have an exercise ball that I could sit on if need be).

Two benefits I've experienced from standing up at work: First, I don't get the mid-afternoon sleepies any more. When standing, the 3pm head nods just don't happen. Second, my lower back gives me far fewer problems than it used to. Two years ago, I was routinely waking up in the morning with a sore back. Now, not so much. Sure, yes, it could also be that I've taken up taekwondo in the interim -- that's great for core strength -- but my experience suggests the standing desk is helping as well.

All told, I'm delighted with it. I really do hope everyone who does desk work for hours a day can try it out and see how their body reacts. I suspect a great many people will prefer it for much of their work time over sitting.

p.s., And yes, I realize I'm directly contradicting the article. I feel OK about that because, unlike many of the subjects, I actually do use my standing desk as such.

Think about a community you're a member of.

Think about a community you're a member of. It could be an online gaming forum, or a bicycling club, or a sports fan group, or an Ingress team. Are you a leader in that group, or one of the members? If you're a leader, are you also a leader in the other groups (if any) you're a part of?

The reason I ask is that I increasingly suspect that the more impact someone has on a specific community or profession or "space," the less likely he/she is to be in a similar role in the other communities he/she is a member of. Why? The time and energy we need to invest to stay on the forefront of any interest -- required for being a prime mover in an interest-based community -- keeps us from doing the same thing in multiple communities. For example, someone who plays a ton of RPGs and keeps up on all the rule changes and expansion sets and community goings on is just not going to have the time and energy to do the same for a rowing club and a woodworking group and a political discussion forum. Interest-based community leadership requires focus, and that precludes serving in that role for multiple communities.

Granted, there are rare individuals who seem to master multiple domains and are natural organizing forces to boot, but they are far more the exception than the rule.

The rest of us end up having to decide: Do I forgo my other interests in order to go deep enough in this one area (obsess over it, if you will) to lead the community, or do I follow along to some extent multiple communities on a more superficial level?

Those of us with broad and varied interests are going to be forced more into the latter role while those with deeper, narrower interests will naturally gravitate towards leadership in the one place they spend all their time. And both modes are totally acceptable -- too many chiefs can be just as much a problem as no chiefs at all.

What do you prefer? Multi-faceted, yet not deep enough to greatly influence the community, or dedicated and influential, but on just one or two topics?

First, Florida's Republicans undermined its universities' (well, at least one) ability to foster a proper academic environment. Now, Wisconsin is creating a toxic atmosphere that will surely damage that state's public universities for years, if not decades. When you elect people to power who believe that all education should be privatized, do not be surprised when public education becomes a festering pile. They want it to be that way so you will conclude that they've been right all along. They are manipulating you.

How to dismantle higher education in your state:

1) Manufacture a crisis by systematically starving the university system of state funds and slashing their budgets.
2) Prevent the universities from raising tuition in order to make up the budget deficits you have imposed.
3) Declare a financial emergency that requires the university system to be more "flexible" in order to handle budget woes.
4) Invent a story that professors - and teachers - are lazy, underworked, and overpaid.
5) Stack the board of regents with your cronies.
6) Remove tenure from state statute.
7) Disallow individual campuses from writing their own tenure policies so that the power will rest with your stacked board.
8) Watch as your board removes tenure protections to provide "cash-strapped campuses" with the flexibility to fire tenured professors and discontinue programs in order to respond to the financial crisis you've engineered.
9) Watch as many of the most productive, talented, and in-demand faculty leave the university system for other states, quality declines, class sizes rise, and programs are discontinued.
10) Declare public higher education a failure.

Well played, Walker. Well played.

I was annoyed at my phone laying flat on my desk at work -- it was hard to read the screen at that angle -- so I built a charging cradle out of LEGO. Click on the image to see a Photos gallery of the cradle and how the connector fits.

The secret ingredient was a right-angle micro-USB adapter ($5 for a pack of two; see below for link). The charging cable (a normal phone micro-USB cable) slides into the slot on the left and plugs into the right-angle adapter. With that in place, the phone slides right in the slot and charging starts.

Another nifty thing about using the right-angle adapter is that for phones like Samsungs, which have their micro-USB sockets upside down, I could just reverse the build left-to-right, flip the adapter over, and it would work for those devices as well.

I also built in a cable clip to keep the USB cable routed underneath the cradle. Plus, unlike cradles you pay actual money for, I can adjust the angle of this one to fit my preferences perfectly just by adding or removing bricks on the bottom.

Right-angle micro-USB adapter: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00S4XJ9WA (There are many others available...these are the ones I happened to purchase.)

I just cracked open my first bottle of Soylent 2.0, the prepackaged, premixed version of Soylent that their website describes as "Delicious Soylent in convenient ready-to-drink 400 kcal. bottles." Well, I don't doubt at all that it's convenient. And it is indeed ready-to-drink. And I fully accept that it is nutritious. But I disagree that it is "delicious."

When I think of "delicious" foods, the things that come to mind are pizza, sushi, ice cream, warm chocolate-chip cookies, and a good steak. After half a bottle of Soylent 2.0, I can safely state that it is not nearly as delicious as any of those.

So what does it taste like? Imagine really, really weak chocolate milk if you made it with unsweetened cocoa powder and skim milk. Now, back off the flavor about 75%. That's pretty close. There's also a very mild oat (?) flavor in the background, but it's tough to notice. It's certainly not "delicious," but it's not yucky, either. It's just kind of blah.

The taste (or lack thereof) isn't the most surprising characteristic of Soylent 2.0, though, it's the texture: There isn't any. The texture is like a very thin paint. There is absolutely nothing to chew or to provide any sort of mouth feel whatsoever. Water wets. Milkshakes have frozen granules and a variety of textures. This is neither. It more coats the mouth, but uniformly and without any sort of foodiness to it. It's a bit off-putting initially, but only because it's odd...not because it's totally unpleasant.

I'm drinking this at room temperature. I've read other people's opinions who enjoy it more when it's chilled. I'll try that next time. Maybe. If I remember to chill it first. And actually, that's the real attraction of Soylent 2.0 for me: zero prep. If I'm crammed at work and just don't have time to go get food, I can break open a bottle and have something akin to a lunch while I'm working. Clean-up consists of tossing the empty bottle into the recycling bin. Nice.

More as I know it...

That's an impressive artistic vision.

The astronaut said he could see entire systems of pollution: smoke clouds from wildfires that covered parts of the US, sections of Asia with continuous, visible pollution nearly all year round. He said the message “we need to save the planet” slightly missed the point: “The planet will get better, it’s us that won’t be here because we’ll destroy the environment.”

I'm not a Disney superfan.

I'm not a Disney superfan. I was mildly entertained by Frozen, and I didn't even see The Good Dinosaur. That said, ZOOTOPIA was flat-out amazing. The animation was without question the best I've ever seen. The visuals were incredibly lush and detailed with just the right balance of authenticity and cartoony-ness. The voice acting was stellar. The plot was engaging and the comic relief was laugh-out-loud funny. And here's the most impressive part: It's actually a morality play. The lesson that prejudice keeps people from achieving what they're truly capable of is front and center, but it never detracts from the story or the overall experience. Goodwin and Bateman are joined by a who's who of famous and talented actors, and don't be surprised to find yourself actually caring for these characters. This movie is great for any kid old enough to sit through a whole film, and adults are going to enjoy themselves just as much, if not more. RECOMMENDED. Now go see it.
