The kids and I made our first truly from-scratch LEGO Mindstorms EV3 creation today: A robotic gumball dispenser (yes, the kids' idea). It reads color-coded cards to dispense specific amounts of gumballs. My daughter is demonstrating it in the GIF. It uses the color sensor to read the card and the medium (stepper) motor to spin the dispenser wheel. It also says the color of the card out loud and displays a big mouth on the Intelligent Brick's display while the program is running.

Ray of Sunshine I need to read up on what FIRST is first. ;-)
ReplyDeleteRay of Sunshine I read through the FIRST Lego League stuff last night. Wow...seems complicated. I think I'd rather participate in a team that already knows what it's doing before attempting to co-captain one. I signed up for the FIRST TeamUp service, but no teams in Cincy are currently looking for more members. Hopefully that will change later in the Spring when we get closer to the new season starting. Are you already part of one?
ReplyDeleteI investigated setting up an FLL team at my kids school. too complicated. I started a Scratch club instead. While not 1/5 as exciting as Lego robots, the Scratch club is self sustaining.
ReplyDeleteOur kids' school starts coding in 5th grade as part of the curriculum, but a Scratch club sounds interesting.
