Just "ate" my lunch of ~16 oz.

Just "ate" my lunch of ~16 oz. of Soylent 1.4, which equates to about 500 calories. It's strange...I go through the same thought process every sip: First, I smell it and it smells almost woody...not a smell I usually associate with food. Then, I start sipping and my mouth (tongue) thinks "this is weird." The mouth-feel is not like another food I know. Then the "flavor" hits and I think, "oh, that's not bad." Then I sit the bottle down and the "flavor" slowly fades from my mouth. Repeat.

Now that I'm done, I feel reasonably full. It's almost like if I had a medium-sized milkshake for lunch. As someone who really enjoys milkshakes, I have to admit that I know what that's like first-hand.

The big test will be whether or not I start getting the head-nods around 2:30pm. The sugar release in Soylent is such that I'm hoping to not experience that (which I often do when just eating whatever I want for lunch). I brought a baggie of carrot and celery sticks, just in case I feel a need to chew on something.

More as I know it...

  1. I'm sorry to ask ( I guess you said it before in some of your posts ) but why are doing this ?I'm just wondering, for me  food is so much more than just calories :-) Craig Froehle

  2. Irina Tcherednichenko I love food. Loooooove it. That's part of the problem...I can easily inhale far more calories than I have time to burn up via exercise. So, part of it is my desire to more closely control my caloric intake. Another part of it is just exploration of something new; I like trying things. Finally, if it works for me, it might make it easier to eat healthfully (my natural diet isn't nearly as balanced as I would like it to be). Those are my reasons, but they may not be others'.

  3. Please do, as you apparently plan, keep us posted. I'm quite curious about this stuff.

  4. I think they might make a lot of money from people trying it out. It's so appealing to be able to drink your lunch and get on with the day. But at the same time it could never replace the amazing texture and flavour of e.g. a sirloin steak...so it'd have to be a weekday thing.

  6. Craig Froehle very curious to see how this works for you.  Not sure I could give up 'food' - but have always wanted to try something non-traditional with caloric consumption

  7. Since you are getting lots of nutrients and minerals, you should notice after a few days it'll seems to taste better, an acquired taste so to say, once the body figures it out, it should crave it. Interesting to see if you have the same experience.

  8. You could make it taste better by mixing in a boatload of chocolate syrup.  :)

  9. I plan on "flavor-hacking" it, Scott Parker
