While solar and wind are rocking it in 2015, it’s important to note that they still just represent 7.6% of all US electricity generation capacity, and their percentage of electricity generation is even lower (report -forthcoming-now published). Overall, all renewables now account for 18% of US electricity generation capacity.
Emphasis added. 18% is pretty damn impressive considering renewable energy has been shackled and choked by underfunding and patent trolling for the better part of the last century while the fossil fuel industry has benefited from subsidies and preferential treatment.
The banks were happy to pay for wind turbines back when they took more than two years to pay for themselves. The breadbasket Midwest plains are going to get some extra topsoil from the shade that the portable solar panels will provide fallow land rotated out.
Renewable is different from sustainable. About 10% of generating capacity (and more than 1/2 renewable) is from hydroelectric which is definitely not environmental friendly nor sustainable in many areas due to climate change.
