(Sorry... I just couldn't resist. ;-) But seriously, clearly Volkswagon felt that this was necessary/desirable from a business point of view at the time. Was that just stupidity, or was it a case that they believed it was the only way to compete with other manufacturers - possibly because they perform similar shenanigans?)
