For some reason, Christopher Butler's commentary on his post (shared below) reminded me of Ozzy Man Reviews, some of which (like this one) just put me in stitches every time.

Christopher Butler's introduction to this video is the funniest thing I've read this week.

There are advantages to being a country boy. For starters, we know the difference between a bee, a wasp, and yellowjacket. Bees are awesome and friendly and leave you alone unless you're just a jackass. Wasps are easily offended and will give you a swift talking to before leaving for more important matters.

Yellowjackets will fuck up your whole week.

Nothing this man in the video does is wise. Starting with "I've got wasps." No, friend, those are yellowjackets...or if you prefer, tiny yellow-striped bullets with your name all over them. They hate you. They want you to know pain and despair. They are nature's drone strikes. Abandon all hope. They are the Sideshow Bob of the animal kingdom, and we're all named Bart.

Do not be this man. This man pours soap and water in a yellowjacket nest in broad daylight while wearing flip flops.

This man has not vanquished demons. He has just cleansed them for the reckoning to come.

Interesting Note: when you smoosh a yellowjacket, it releases a pheromone that attracts other yellowjackets. Like...a lot. Smoosh one with your foot, and within a minute or so, another will come hovering over its now 2-Dimensional friend and investigate like yellowjacket FBI. Smoosh that one. Another will come zooming over soon. If you're far enough away from yellowjacket headquarters, you can kill dozens that way...assuming your bored and stupid. Stupid, because odds are you'll eventually attract too many too smoosh at once, and you'll end up covered in the yellowjacket equivalent of strongly-worded notices of complaint.

My brother once ran a push mower over a yellowjacket nest considerably larger than this one. He was covered in stings from head to toe by the time he made it back to the house, basically stripping as he sprinted. It was hilarious. If you're curious, no, he didn't see a doctor because we're from Kentucky and getting bit, stung, and spending our summers bleeding and screaming was our goddamn birthright and privilege.

Academic research publishing is an economic scam and the peer review process is dramatically influenced by both luck (in terms of who you get to review your paper and how they're feeling when they review it) and who you know.

There...I said what everyone actually thinks.

Let us read what we paid for

Imagine a business like this: you get highly trained experts to give you their research for free... and then you sell it back to them.  Of course these experts need equipment, and they need to earn a living... so you get taxpayers to foot the bill.

And if the taxpayers want to actually read the papers they paid for?   Then you charge them a big fee!

It's not surprising that with this business model, big publishers are getting rich while libraries go broke.  Reed-Elsevier has a 37% profit margin!

But people are starting to fight back — from governments to energetic students like ‎Alexandra Elbakyan here.

On Friday, the Competitiveness Council —a gathering of European ministers of science, innovation, trade, and industry—said that all publicly funded scientific papers published in Europe should be made free to access by 2020

This will start a big fight, and it may take longer than 2020.   But Alexandra Elbakyan isn't waiting around.

In 2011, as a computer science grad student in Kazakhstan, she got sick of paying big fees to read science papers.  She set up SciHub, a pirate website that steals papers from the publishers and sets them free.

SciHub now has 51,000,000 papers in its database.  In October 2015, Elsevier sued them.  In November, their domain name was shut down.  But they popped up somewhere else.  By February, people were downloading 200,000 papers per day.   Even scientists with paid access to the publisher's databases are starting to use SciHub, because it's easier to use.

Clearly piracy is the not the ultimate solution. Elbakyan now lives in an undisclosed location, to avoid being extradited.  But she gave the world a much-needed kick in the butt.   The old business model of get smart people to work for free and sell the product back to them is on its way out.

For more, read:

John Bohannon, Who's downloading pirated papers? Everyone, Science, 28 April 2016, http://www.sciencemag.org/news/2016/04/whos-downloading-pirated-papers-everyone

and especially the SciHub Twitter feed:

https://twitter.com/Sci_Hub

Also read this:

27 May 2016, http://www.sciencemag.org/news/2016/05/dramatic-statement-european-leaders-call-immediate-open-access-all-scientific-papers

The Dutch government is really pushing this!  Congratulations to them!

PHONE SCAMMER FIGHT - ROUND 2

So I took the approach that Filippo Salustri's son took when dealing with phone scammers (saying "Yes" to every question, as documented here: https://plus.google.com/+FilippoSalustri/posts/21c95kqcPMe?hl=en), and I only got 4 responses into the conversation before they hung up on me, no profanity or anything! I guess I need to work on my technique.

Did you know there's an entire domain of spam and scams targeting academics (professors and researchers)?

Did you know there's an entire domain of spam and scams targeting academics (professors and researchers)? I get many offers a week to submit papers to bogus journals, attend and present at bogus conferences, and buy bogus datasets, all with the hopes of either getting a back-door into my university's network or scamming me out of some money.

Here's today's example. Looks pretty legit, no? Nope, not really. I mean, there may be an actual event taking place, but it's not a real academic research conference. Also, that paper was published in 2014, so it wouldn't warrant an invitation to present at an actual conference. And, "Las Vegas, USA"?? What is up with that?

I suspect that if I were to submit an abstract, they would come back with a registration fee or a speaking fee or something that I would then be asked to pay. And that's the scam; pay us money for the "privilege" of speaking at our fake event. Of course, those links could also attempt to plant malware on my computer. Grrr. >:-(

This is a very good list, on which most people will find something useful (if only a helpful reminder).

This is a very good list, on which most people will find something useful (if only a helpful reminder).

To the list, I would add a few things:

HOMOGENEOUS/HOMOGENOUS
If things are all the same, they are homogeneous (five syllables: ho-mo-JEEN-e-us). If they share biologic similarities because they have the same origin or come from the same place or source, but aren't necessarily all the same, they are homogenous (four syllables: ho-MOJ-ən-əs); this is typically only used to describe living things biologically.

REGARDLESS/IRREGARDLESS
Regardless means that the next statement is true irrespective of whatever statement preceded it. Irregardless isn't a word; stop using it.

INCENTIVIZE/INCENT
While some may claim these are a legitimate words, they're really just improper verbifications (think opposite of a gerund) of the noun "incentive." English already has several perfectly good words to mean "provide an incentive (to do something)," such as motivate, influence, persuade, inspire, propel, actuate, and so on. Business professionals should not be using sentences like, "We need to incent our sales team." Ever.

MORAL/MORALE
Moral (MOR-əl), as an adjective, is similar to "ethical," although philosophers will tell me I'm wrong on that. Moral, as a noun, is the (ethical) lesson in a story. Morale (mor-AL), on the other hand, is a noun meaning the general attitude or emotional state of a group or organization. The 'e' on the end makes all the difference between these unrelated words.

I posted about the increasing prevalence of weapons in LEGO sets back in 2014 (https://plus.google.com/+CraigFroehle/posts/FMybDmsKigp), but it was anecdotal. This study clearly seems to support the conclusion that LEGO toys are becoming more violent:

"The results from both studies, weapons count and perceived violence, showed significant exponential increases of violence over time. LEGO products have become significantly more violent."

This is my family's dog. She's a rescue and a mutt, but we are uncertain as to what she's a mix of. It seems like there's some German Shepherd in there, but she's only about 45 lbs fully grown. Her coloring reminds us of a Doberman, but she's way too small for that. Any ideas?

p.s., Her name is Zoe and she's a total spaz. She herds our youngest child constantly, nipping at his heels and barking at him when he runs through the house.

As I was driving home today, I got a robocall from the ubiquitously annoying "Credit card services". It's a scam to get you to reveal your credit card information so they can commit fraud, steal your identity, or do something else not at all good for you. Today, instead of just hanging up, I decided to play along and see how long I could keep the human on the line (every second he's talking to me is a second he's not scamming someone who might actually fall for it). Here's how it went:

SCAMMER: Thank you so much for holding. Align Account Services. How are you doing today?

ME: I'm OK.

SCAMMER: I believe you pressed '9' to get a lower rate on your credit card accounts. Is that correct?

ME: I would love to get lower rates on my credit cards.

SCAMMER: Like how many credit cards do you have in total?

ME: 17 or 18.

SCAMMER: Shove it up in your ass and jump like a fucking kangaroo.

ME: Banana split Milwaukee?

SCAMMER: Shove it in your ass, [something], you motherfucker.

ME: Ha ha ha. [he hangs up]

Recording here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B0yZjaoiTgnGRzRhcUZaLTVRclU

So, I get the feeling that these guys are starting to get a hold of a lot more anti-scammers who try to string them along. And that's a great sign. So, do your part and take a few minutes the next time you get a call like this...it might just be your chance to strike a blow for justice and righteousness. Or, at a minimum, someone with an accent will curse you out...at no charge!
