Safe to say, distance tracking is not Pokemon GO's strong suit.

  1. Bigscrod wants cake If that's the case, I'm screwed. I never walk to somewhere; I only walk to someplace and back again.

  2. It tracks movement and speed while the app is open. If you're moving too fast, over about 20mph, it doesn't count that movement. That's the reported number; I've had issues with it too, so I suspect a programming issue is preventing that from being done accurately.

  3. In Ingress (having spent some time studying) it tracks distance between points where you do something that counts, like hacking a portal, attacking something, or (importantly) recharging a portal, which you can do without being near a portal. It also cuts out over about 30 km/h to reduce drivegressing. As Pokemon is an extremely similar game, it's likely the same things hold. What I've been doing is healing pokemon at apogee/perigee of my walk to register activity betweek pokestops. I feel like it's actually tracking faster than I'm walking. Then again, I walk a lot.

  4. Brad D Yep, I walk with the app open and screen on, and (sadly) I don't walk faster than 20mph (which would be frigging AWESOME!). I've found that the distance I actually cover tends to be about 40%-50% of what I get credit for in the app, so figuring out why will be useful.

  5. you forget to calculate the extra tenth (or more) of a kilometer needed once it it's 5.0 of 5.0, or 10.0 of 10.0...ever noticed that?

  6. David Ford: when I got my onyx guardian badge in ingress, it clicked over to 149 days, and then FORTY FOUR HOURS LATER finally clicked over to 150 days and gave me my badge. Niantic likes antici..... pation.

  7. My son and I went out PoGo-ing this evening after dinner. We walked around for well over an hour, hitting pokestops and gyms all around the neighborhood, and the total distance incremented onto our eggs was...3 km. I mean, seriously...that's silly.
