OK, I'll admit it...I want McDonald's to succeed. I want McDonald's to not suck, to offer good service, to make yummy, good-quality food, and to be a great company. If this totally off-the-wall ad campaign is a sign of things to come, I'm heartened, because it's McDonald's not taking itself so seriously that it can't poke a little fun at itself. And if fast food needs to be anything (besides compliant with health regulations, that is), it's fun. Otherwise, it really doesn't offer anything other than speed, and fast casual has covered that base pretty squarely now. Go, McD's...go for the slightly absurd...it can only help.

  1. Just skip meat in burgers and start selling cardboard burgers, i swear people will not notice any difference.

  2. Paresh Desai right? I really don't think that's actual beef!

  3. Whether this brings in more customers or not, that's really funny.

  4. MacDonald's burgers were pretty good when I was a kid. ( Long time ago). As they perfected the "fast" part of fast food, it became something that is merely , edible.

  5. John Bailey And now they've forgotten how to do "fast". So what's the point?

I wish kids today could try a McDonalds of the 1970s. It would blow their minds.

  6. Phillip Landmeier Comparing McD's today with McD's of 40 years ago isn't fair -- they're radically different restaurants. McD's abandoned the make-to-stock model for complete sandwiches because it wasn't satisfying people as much today ... customers are more demanding when it comes to personalization. All told, the amount of customization and prep-after-order that McD's offers while keeping order fulfillment still quite quick is impressive. The only ones doing it faster have far more limited menus to deal with.

  7. And to say they cant afford $ 15 an hour pay for employees is just BS. They are already replacing the workers with touch screen order machins.

  8. Craig Froehle I understand the why. I just don't like it. My only reason to go to a place like McD's is speed. If I can't have speed, I might as well go to a proper restaurant. I think McD's has forgotten their purpose for existing.

  9. Paresh Desai Yes, which, according to their analysis, is much cheaper than a live person. Many people these days also prefer computerized ordering, like myself.

Around here there's a big chain of gas station / convenience stores called Sheetz. Nice places, actually. They have installed computerized ordering stations and fast food. It's great, except it's not fast. You order, pay, and then you wait, and wait, and wait until a human assembles the order. Then you go stand in line to pay. That's not what I want either. And you don't even get to overlap the waiting in line at the cashier with waiting for the food. It takes forever. Really DUMB.

  10. Paresh Desai I first saw the order screen a few months ago. The clerk came from behind the counter to show me how to use it! I told her " Let me get this straight, you are going to show me how to do your job?" Ludicrous! Next they will want me to cook the food.

  11. Remember those free refill of coffee with 25 cent coffee days are replaced by starfucks expensive coffee with italian word salads. Free water replaced by bottled perrier. The corporations are out to screw you every which way they can.

  12. Phillip Landmeier I actually like their food, and fast enough is fast enough. If I'm in a huge hurry, there's always the drive-thru.

  13. When it comes to McDonalds, I'm reminded of the old saying "There are three ways of doing things; good, fast, and cheap. You can only pick two."

  14. This is kind of funny, although I am so tired of seeing Anthony Sullivan.

McDonald's totally sucks these days, except when it comes to Happy Meal.

  15. Craig Froehle MacDonald's serves a purpose, my only gripe is trying to get the customer to do the clerk's job. I'm at a restaurant for a reason. Otherwise I could prepare my own food.

  16. John Bailey Personally, I consider placing my order to be far less of a chore than actually preparing the food, but that's me.

  17. Craig Froehle You have a point, that is the only reason I go to MacDonald's. There are other burger restaurants that cook to order, and are magnitudes above Mickies, as far as taste. You pay more, and wait a little longer. I'm older than you. I remember when fast food places also poured your drink. MacDonald's originally was a sit down, waiter , waitress served restaurant. The food was also better. Fast is a trade off, something I decide to do when necessary. From my point of view, eliminating jobs by foisting the work on the customer ( just like the self check out) sticks in my craw.

  18. McDonald's is nothing but a faceless corporation. Serving good food to the customer is way way way down. It's list of priorities. And it shows. I hope they don't succeed and maybe it'll be a lesson to other chains who might learn something. They shameless push huge portions of soda and pay their employees shite money.
