First, the GOP wanted to eliminate the student loan interest deduction, and now they're proposing ending tuition waiver tax credits. Combined, these could easily end PhD programs at a lot of public research universities. And that will mean higher tuitions for undergrads, or fewer courses being taught...or both. The GOP's war on education continues apace.

When we let politics trump science, people are needlessly put in harm's way. http://arstechnica.com/science/2017/01/self-censoring-fears...
Things like this all seem so petty and deliberately aimed at making life worse for middle class and lower income people.
ReplyDeleteIt will cripple the US economy for the next 50 years and cede global leadership to China.
ReplyDeleteWell done, Don!
Actually it just means they'll have justification for increasing H1B allotments, which is probably what this is all about: more globalism.
ReplyDeleteWe need educated people, but (as with just about every other job except politician, CEO or billionaire) we don't want to give them proper pay.
Well, call your MoC. Write them. Sit in at their offices. Let them know what you think of this tax bill farce.
ReplyDeleteI would never have been able to afford to go back to school and get my MS if my tuition support had been considered taxable income.
ReplyDeleteI think the notion of doing tuition waivers so as to get around the tax situation was just gaining traction as I was a grad student. Traditionally, RA/TA ships would cover the cost of tuition plus a bit extra maybe, but tuition was beginning to get significant. Oh, and student health care, too. (Yeah, this was early 90s).
ReplyDeleteCindy Brown My Congressional representatives either already agree with my view (Brown) or don't care about my opinion (all the others), so no sense wasting my time yelling into purposively deaf ears.
ReplyDeleteI disagree. Let the one(s) who agree with you know that you're in their corner (supportive calls are important too), and don't let the ones that disagree with you claim that no one cares b/c no one is calling them.
ReplyDeleteEspecially if you use something like resistbot, it's very little effort on your part but (the critical point here) there are so many more of you than the single MoC that even some of you making the effort will be overwhelming, whether it changes their vote or not. Do not let them say that no one complained about their position.
Cindy Brown Complaining about their position doesn't actually keep them from claiming that no one complained. You seem to forget that the GOP is no longer even bothering to give lip service to the truth...or even reality. They will do what they want to and our job is merely to get them voted out of office as quickly as possible.
ReplyDeleteOf course the GOP takes a stance against education. They have to protect their voter base. More people with higher education means fewer voters for them.
