This pattern was spelled out very clearly in, of all things, a Mark Wahlberg movie called "Rock Star". He plays a singer from a cover band who gets hired into the band he covered. Due to fan lock-in, the band is trapped in a cycle of producing new songs that sound as close as possible to the old ones, essentially becoming its own cover band.
