ReplyDeleteA leading cause of market failure is bilateral monopolies, as is the case with this course.
ReplyDeleteI did have a history professor (American History) who asked, "How many of you are here for your constitutional requirement?"
ReplyDeleteMost of the students raised their hands.
"Fine. Show up for class and pass the final," he said. "How many history majors?"
Three or four people raised their hands.
"You folks have to show up, pass the final with a B+ or better, and do a term paper."
Henry Wong The problem is that market fundamentalists refuse to acknowledge the existence, much less ubiquity, of market failures.
ReplyDeleteThe main problem I see with the assumption the teacher is making in this example is that the humans creating the system were making it only to benefit other humans. There isn't consideration for the possibility that maybe their interests were selfish, and that by adding further required classes that the students must pay for to earn their degree, it would increase their profits.
ReplyDeleteBrad D Most changes to curriculum happen at the program level and don't increase credit-hour requirements because those limits are institutionally or legislatively established. For example, we can't just arbitrarily say our degree requires 100 credit-hours when the state standards say 85-90 is permitted.
