What is it with undergrads asking me where other professors are?

What is it with undergrads asking me where other professors are?

Student: Excuse me, but do you know where Prof. ______ is?

Me: Is his door open?

Student: No, I don't think he's there.

Me: My guess is that he is elsewhere.

My PhD is actually in snark.

  1. My smartass response would be, "Sorry, its my turn to watch him next week."

  2. Fen D I've had kids saying "But you said last week..." even though I'm fairly positive I never did, and it turns out another teacher said it.

  7. When I was an undergradual student, and I could not find a professor, I would ask a colleague if he had come in that day. If they answered, "yes", I would leave a note and try again later.

  8. Eric Mintz That tactic works well only if professors know when their colleagues come into the office. We actually rarely (or at least inconsistently) know that.
