Ohio Rep.

Ohio Rep. Ron Maag (R...of course) wants to force university faculty and staff to allow concealed-carry guns into our workplaces, yet his workplace (the Ohio Statehouse) remains gun-free. When your workplace is so averse to risk that it won't even permit backpacks inside, do you really have any place telling others what weapons we should have to allow in our offices and classrooms?

The University's recommendation to faculty:

The University's recommendation to faculty:
• Be careful discussing sensitive topics
• Drop certain topics from your curriculum
• Not “go there” if you sense anger
• Limit student access off hours

Wow...that's SO going to improve educational outcomes!

To my faculty colleagues in Texas, you have my sincerest condolences and I will be happy to pass on your vitae to our hiring committee. Ohio hasn't (yet) been ravaged by this senseless ammophilia.

I actually saw a post where a math educator stated that this problem (top blue box), which has caused yet another firestorm among the unwashed masses over on Facebook, can be interpreted in several ways. No, really not...there's only one correct way to "interpret" this problem.

I blame Thorsen Vreeland for making me even aware of this. Thanks for nothing, pal. ;-)

Saw Deadpool today.

Saw Deadpool today. Ryan Reynolds makes it work. Some actors become the definitive characterization of their comic book alter egos. Christopher Reeve as Superman. Christian Bale as Batman. Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Ironman. Patrick Stewart as Professor X and Ian McKellan as Magneto. Anyone else in that role is disappointing to the point where our ability to suspend disbelief of the inherent silliness starts to waver. Reynolds is Deadpool...I simply cannot imagine anyone else carrying that role even half as well. Every other part in the movie could be filled by half a dozen other actors, but Reynolds is irreplaceable as the eponymous anti-hero.

5 stars: Definitely worth seeing

The UK is known for rather careful attention to public safety, whether it be the Tube's perpetual admonitions to "Mind the Gap" or the tendency of pharmacists to make sure that you are taking exactly the right medicine. But one of the least-known yet most important public safety measures can be heard every Sunday, as church bells continue to ring not just once or twice, but for a good fifteen minutes or so. This gives ample warning to the citizenry whenever the gods have returned to feed, calling on the faithful elect to attend the sacrifice while warning heathens of all stripes to flee, flee, for the gods are upon us and shall not depart until their hunger is sated. Ia! Ia!

Chalk up a point for ordinary British thoughtfulness, in not just ringing the combination dinner gong and warning bell once and hoping everyone hears it.

Teachers shouldn't get raises because......bible.....something....something....

Regarding teacher pay, McGill said: "It's a Biblical principle. If you double a teacher's pay scale, you'll attract people who aren't called to teach. To go in and raise someone's child for eight hours a day, or many people's children for eight hours a day, requires a calling.  It better be a calling in your life. I know I wouldn't want to do it, OK?"

"So despite being the seventh richest nation in the world, why do U.S.

"So despite being the seventh richest nation in the world, why do U.S. schools lag behind? It's clear that some states are on par with countries that are much, much more economically burdened. One reason is America's repeated failure to invest in education. According to the US News, federal funding for education has fallen drastically. Congress has cut funding for K-12 education by nearly 20 percent since 2011—five times more than overall spending cuts."

That Americans elected these climate change deniers and conspiracy theorists who are now, inexplicably, in charge of the laws limiting our response to climate change makes me question the wisdom of letting every "adult" vote. Or, to be more precise, I am increasingly unnerved by the prospect of allowing a willfully ignorant electorate to determine whether or not we work towards averting mitigating the world's worst man-made catastrophe.
