Worth 3 minutes of your time.

Worth 3 minutes of your time. Yes, it's a bit superficial, but it's all good advice. But the piece of advice he doesn't give you is the most important of all: To have the best chance at being successful, be born into a wealthy family that cares about and supports you.

  1. A bit superficial, but it pretty much has to be at that length. Nothing wrong with that list; there's some truth in each one of those points. I'm starting to get a bit cynical about any pat "secret to success", though. Humans are wired to look for patterns and to construct narratives to explain how they got from A to B. There's no particular reason to trust that anyone has meaningful insight into the specific personal choices, habits, and blind luck that ended up being determinative in the end. And as you noted, he left out the important secret of having the foresight to be born into a comfortable or better family environment in a rich country. It doesn't guarantee success, but a person with a 100 IQ born in London, Los Angeles, or Vancouver tends to start life higher up the Maslow hierarchy than someone with a 150 IQ born in a slum in Mumbai or Nairobi.

  2. In a discussion with a fellow liberal last night who wanted to rant at liberal hypocrisy, I noted that the other side has no such burdens.

    The secret of success.

  5. Pretty much defines my life, 20 years in the Submarine Force, 7 years in management with Computer Sciences Raytheon at Cape Canaveral and 21+ years in Wealth Management with Merrill Lynch, and I feel like I haven't worked a day since high school.
