The sooner we (the US) do away with privately run health insurance companies, or at least GREATLY reduce the scope of their role in our healthcare system, the better off we'll be. A profit-seeking health insurance company's core mission (making profits for its shareholders) is at odds with its social function, which is maximizing the health and wellness of the people who need healthcare. Capitalism has a role in healthcare, but it is likely to be far more limited than what we currently permit.

Can you CHOOSE to believe something different?

Can you CHOOSE to believe something different?
If you believe something, can you consciously decide to fundamentally change that belief simply through force of will and without additional information?

For example (and this is literally just something random), if someone believes (as in considers it to be truth) that ice cream is unhealthy, without obtaining any new info about its dietary aspects or whatever, could that person flip that belief and start believing that ice cream is, in fact, healthy?

Please don't fixate on ice cream or diet in your response. This question is general and applies to any belief one might hold, be it about diet or politics or religion or art or humanity in general.

FTA: Students at elite colleges are even richer than experts realized, according to a new study based on millions of anonymous tax filings and tuition records. At 38 colleges in America, including five in the Ivy League – Dartmouth, Princeton, Yale, Penn and Brown – more students came from the top 1 percent of the income scale than from the entire bottom 60 percent.

In stark contrast, my institution, the University of Cincinnati, ranked #700, has <1% of its student body from the top 1% wealthiest families and >30% from the bottom 60%. But then we're a state research school.

If the county doesn't send me a property tax bill, that's on them and I'm good to go without paying anything this half-year, right?

Right?
