Saw Deadpool today. Ryan Reynolds makes it work. Some actors become the definitive characterization of their comic book alter egos. Christopher Reeve as Superman. Christian Bale as Batman. Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Ironman. Patrick Stewart as Professor X and Ian McKellan as Magneto. Anyone else in that role is disappointing to the point where our ability to suspend disbelief of the inherent silliness starts to waver. Reynolds is Deadpool...I simply cannot imagine anyone else carrying that role even half as well. Every other part in the movie could be filled by half a dozen other actors, but Reynolds is irreplaceable as the eponymous anti-hero.
5 stars: Definitely worth seeing

OK, I've got to admit. Ever since I saw Reynolds in Van Wilder, and even Blade, I've liked him as an actor. Craig Froehle, with your assessment of the other actors and their characters is spot on.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe you wrote "eponymous anti-hero"
ReplyDeleteI loved Morena Baccarin, though.
ReplyDeletefantastic.
ReplyDeleteWho is Spidermans??
ReplyDeleteI just got back from seeing it -- one of the best movies I've seen in a while. And I usually don't like love stories.
ReplyDeleteSteve Bertolacci Even "testicle(s) with teeth" deserve the right to 'some' happiness and a happy (albeit incredibly bloody) end. ;)
ReplyDeleteCraig Froehle You can attest that I'd been getting .... [ahem] eager to be exposed to the rampant Crazie that is Deadpool. But for me? I was quite literally 100% sold on the movie during the opening credits. To post that very crap at the start level-set the entire tone and vehicle of the movie in such a way that every subsequent 4th Wall break became even funnier because it wasn't just obvious it was blatantly deliberate and done for the best laughs imaginable.
ReplyDeleteI do agree that Ryan is now the 'only' Deadpool there could ever be. I'm just pleased he managed to get it to happen when he's a young enough actor that we'll (hopefully) have at least 2 or 3 sequels available. I just don't want to see him 'trying' to be the hero in something where he's obviously outclassed. (I'm looking at you Harrison and Crystal Skull.)
That's great. I am going to go and see it myself today. Can't wait!
ReplyDeleteGonna see it a third time this week.
ReplyDeleteEli Fennell Reeves appeared in the 70s and reflected the Superman of the 40s to early 70s. In the mid- to late-80s, the tenor of Superman changed, so his on-screen personification had to as well. I don't think, however, that anyone has been as iconic in that role as Reeve was (bad scripts and all).
