The University's recommendation to faculty:
• Be careful discussing sensitive topics
• Drop certain topics from your curriculum
• Not “go there” if you sense anger
• Limit student access off hours
Wow...that's SO going to improve educational outcomes!
To my faculty colleagues in Texas, you have my sincerest condolences and I will be happy to pass on your vitae to our hiring committee. Ohio hasn't (yet) been ravaged by this senseless ammophilia.

ReplyDeleteAre guns allowed in government offices in Texas?
ReplyDeleteAre they fucking serious?!?
ReplyDeleteWait, don't answer that. Let me live in the illusion this is a joke.
Uh..joke's over Dan Eastwood. I think we need to start lobbying for guns to be carried into state and federal government buildings. Fair is fair.
ReplyDeleteIt may not seem like it, but I think this is a fairly progressive approach for Texas. I believe their usual advice would be to buy the biggest and most powerful gun you can manage, and then make sure that all your students know you have it.
ReplyDeleteBrad D Remember this is the university's advice, and universities tend to be filled with liberals. Even in Texas.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds a lot like the advice given to women on how not to get raped.
ReplyDeleteOh PJ C you have provided a great gift to the english lexicon, ammosexual. This is my new word for gun nuts.
ReplyDeleteGuys, we need to stop focusing on limiting or restricting gun ownership. There are so many weapons on the streets of America there simply is no way to remove them, bar a search of every square inch of this country. We need to work with science to develop render a projectile harmless, irregardless of its velocity.
ReplyDeleteI thought about that Viana de León , but the problem is that it is relatively easy to make a bullet from scratch.

Viana de León How about restricting ammo AND requiring some additional proof that one is capable of handling a weapon? I know these things don't exist now, but items which should be required to own ammo. I would include a passing visual exam, practical assessment with minimum accuracy score, approved storage lockers on premises of gun owners, assessments on shooting in high stress situations, proper handling and cleaning of weapons (far beyond what is currently done). If people want ammo for their guns, they should prove they can be responsible for it. There's nothing wrong with additional regulation.
ReplyDeleteAll measures are bound to fail if they are never attempted.
ReplyDeleteViana de León gun nuts will. I know several that keep spare brass because they believe the government will limit casing. I do like Chris Rock's idea of charging 5,000 dollars per bullet.

Viana de León But "gun nuts" (i.e., those who support the NRA) are responsible for keeping meaningful gun regulation from passing, thereby enabling the massive inflow of weapons into the hands of many who shouldn't have access to them.
ReplyDeleteWhat's a sensitive topic? Something that contradicts a student's views?
ReplyDeleteIn one college class, the professor announced that he wanted underclassmen to drop the course, because it required a certain level of maturity. One underclassman then began arguing with Professor Berger, who remained unmoved. That underclassman left in a screaming rage.
(I went up to Prof. Berger afterwards, told him I was an underclassman, and that I believed I could handle his class. He said, "I think you can, too.")
In another, our physics professor brought in a 'psychic' to demonstrate his psychic abiities. The man was actually a professional magician and president of the local CSICOP group. There were students who didn't want to believe they'd been fooled so easily, that there was, in fact, legitimate psychic phenomenon, etc.
The Univ. of Houston is making it sound like teachers can't cross those lines.
Sensitive topic = anything that might possibly upset anyone (IOW, everything).
ReplyDeleteYou know, now that I think about it...this is creating the perfect arc. Charles Whitman started the modern mass shooter by killing 12 and wounding 32 from a tower at the University of Texas...maybe they can build a bronze statue to him...holding his murder wand upward toward Jesus.
ReplyDeleteYoung people packing guns and binge drinking. Yep, no problem there.
