My external expression is contextual, sometimes mood-driven. I swing across the whole spectrum. Internally, what I want from humanity is highly idealistic, but I'm acutely aware that the world is full of unbelievably awful people. So I assume "awful" but keep an open mind. Lol.
Personally, I'd say my baseline is a 6 or 7. I'm pretty much an optimist in believing that things, while bumpy in the short run, trend towards better over the long run. That said, I tend to be a skeptic, especially regarding extraordinary claims, which can lead me to appearing like a cynic when dealing with specific individuals or issues.
I suppose I would have to rate myself at a 5 on average, drifting higher when circumstances allow, drifting lower as evidence suggests. I try to keep realistic expectations with the hope that those expectations will be exceeded. However, when evidence suggests things are headed on the downswing, that's the direction my expectations will go. Like so many others, the current political environment is a prime example of that.
From an unknown source: When I was young, I was an idealist. I found beauty, wonder, and meaning everywhere I looked. When I got older, I became a realist. I saw a world of rough edges and difficult truths. This grew tiresome. So, I decided to be a surrealist. Things got pretty weird after that.
It really varies depending on what's being discussed, and as much as I hate to admit it, who I'm discussing it with.

ReplyDeleteBeing aware of the education level and selfish desires in the general population will keep me there.
3 +/- 2 depending on the day.
ReplyDelete7 probably. I have to be a bit of an idealist to be a teacher.
ReplyDeleteCraig Froehle I wish I could say I was kidding.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely 8.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I describe myself as cynical, I'm probably around a 6 or 7 - idealism that is kept in check by realism.

I am a complete misanthropist who believes in the perfectibility of human nature. We can, but I strongly doubt we will.
