It's amazing how consistent the research is in showing that the only benefits from open and other high-density office designs are cost savings, and those are likely only short-run cost savings. I mean, if you save a million bucks, but the loss of talent and innovation and productivity costs you $2 million the next year, are you really better off?

  3. You're right about saving money by packing people in tighter, but there's one more aspect: mutual surveillance. Everyone's got web access and can goof off indefinitely. If you're packed like a sardine, your coworkers get to see what you're doing.

  4. It has to be driving people out of certain spheres of employment, though.  Software engineering has always had its quirky members, many of whom are a bit OCD or Aspergers-y; routine is a comfort and focusing mechanism.
