Anyone remember playing KILLER: The Assassination Game back in the 80s? It became a phenomenon in my high school with about 30 of us playing it fairly obsessively for several months. My most memorable "kill" was getting to class early one day and taping two D batteries and a wire to the chair of the kid who sat in front of me. He sat down and I passed him a note that said, "BZZT! You've been electrocuted." He wasn't happy, but appreciated the ingenuity. Locker bombs (piles of packing peanuts that tumbled out when you opened your locker) ended up being what drove the principal to ban the game. Somebody always has to go too far.

We need this new building so badly. We're crammed in like sardines into our current facility, which was built for roughly half our current student and faculty counts. Growth is good -- I'll certainly take it over the opposite -- but it does pose problems of its own.

A side benefit of this process that I hadn't anticipated is that it's given me a reason to start learning a little about architecture. Bonus!

First, there was STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, to emphasize the need for more analytical and technical thinking in the students our educational system produces.

Then, I assume because some folks were feeling left out, that was expanded to STEAM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math.

So why not METALS: Math, Engineering, Technology, Arts, Language, and Science? Because, after all, if you can't communicate your wonderful discovery, invention, or innovation, it's not really going to change anything.

Or, we could realize that no discipline is inherently and objectively more important than any other, invest in and teach all the things society needs, let people self-select into them (with guidance, starting at an early age) as their skills and interests suggest is best, and enjoy the fruits of the diverse intellectual environment that has served humanity well for so long.

When I was a pre-teen, first starting to explore music on my own in the early 80s, I remember discovering David Bowie's music (and his on-stage personae) and being rather intimidated by it all. I mean, this was heady, boundary-pushing, edgy stuff, not really intended for young adolescents of the day. That said, as I got older, I started to appreciate the many, many ways that Bowie innovated and expanded what pop/rock music was...and continues to become. His influences are many, lasting, and treasured.

Thanks, David...you are already missed.

Neat thing about this is, the tax credit phase out occurs around the time solar beats all other power supplies, on cost per kW/hr in the US. Based on PV cell production forecasts and the associated kW/hr cost trend lines. (the 30% rule)

"In case you missed it over the holiday, Congress passed a new federal budget, notably extending tax credits for solar, wind, and other renewable energy technologies. The extension differs from previous ones in two ways: it extends the credits for multiple years but also (as ILSR has been discussing since 2012) phases them out over time."

I got my daughter (11) this book for the holidays. She and I started reading it together and I'm really impressed. It has three things in it that I really appreciate:
1) Lots of real-world examples of the different styles of architecture it discusses, with enough, but not too much, detail that it remains interesting and appropriate for kids
2) LEGO-built equivalents of many of the famous buildings pictured in the books, with insights into how to translate each architectural style's characteristics into LEGO-building equivalents
3) Actual step-by-step instructions to build one archetypical example from each style, so you can end with actual models in your hands

Highly recommended if you are, or you have a kid, interested in LEGO and architecture. And at ~$22 for a nice-sized hardcover book, it's reasonably priced.
