Not that this will convince the deniers, but it's a fact.

  1. I think they're now retreating to "ok, fine, it's a fact, but it's too late now to do anything about it."

  2. I'm sure the Deniers will continue to emit CO2 like there's no tomorrow. Just like everyone else on the planet.

  3. Deniers do not reason. They have a belief and they want to twist reality around it.
You know, the Mayas had a God for rain, Chaakh. He is often represented as a man with frog/toad attributes. Why ? Mayas noted that, when rain is about to fall, the frogs in the tropical forests are all singing very loudly.
So, here is the logic of a believer, a pre-scientific mind: the frogs are calling the rain. By imitating them, their songs, we will call the rain as well. And the god of rain must be kinda froggy.
Deniers are the same. Repeating there is no global warming, they think weather will be cooler.
    They confuse causes and consequences.

  4. Oh ! And my grandmother, who wasn't maya, beated the cat when it passed its paws above its ear to clean up. It is a sign of rain...
By beating the cat, she thought rain won't come.
Grandma, wherever you may be, in the great nothing or in the emptiness, forgive me to compare you with Trump aficionados !

  5. That remarkable story of Olivier Malinur's grandmother fits very well in the context of today’s climate change story. Although I interpret it in a slightly different way.

The weather phenomena which are observed around the world today appear to fit not always fully into the theories modern gurus have created on the basis of observations and measurements with magical devices. That's why, like the "wise men" of our ancestors, they need a froglike-figure. Because ghosts, demons, trolls and gods are implausible in the scientific mind of modern people, there is only one solution left, the creations of ‘deniers’ to blame for all the evil the believers see. By beating the deniers, the believers think, evolution will be stopped.

  6. The issue is that we are talking about models fitting reality. When this happens, the chances are high that the model is fitting.
Science is not about certainty but, at the opposite, reducing uncertainty. The deniers do not propose model but rather look at the few uncertainties presents in existing models.
And btw, even mainstream scientists are eating in the evening. We are all diniers.

  7. When you create a model and the reality fits this model, it means your hypothesis is very likely to be right.
In earth sciences, we do not proceed, most times, by experiments but by modelling and/or by observations
It is the case of climate change. By opposition, deniers are yet to create a model which fits. It's easy to point few outliers but much more difficult to make your own model.
Btw, as there's no real possibility of experiment, an outlier does not disprove a model. A model has a statistical validity, an inbuilt uncertainty attached to it. Sciences, and especially geosciences, are never giving 100% predictions. At the contrary, science helps you to reduce uncertainty of a phenomenon and comprehend it better.

  8. It's a curious shift: First it was "The Earth isn't warming!"

Then it was "Well, the Earth is warming, but it's natural, not man-made."

Now it's "Sure, the Earth is warming and humans are probably the cause, but it's too late to do anything about it. Oh well."

    How convenient.

No, you do not get to deny a problem and then later, after your denial has made it worse, claim it's beyond addressing. Your only valid option is to work even harder to mitigate the effects.

  9. That's a very funny question.
    By ACTING.
The easiest and cheapest is stop wasting power: share cars, stop leaving electronic on hold, stop using air conditioning system for every time etc.
When Europe put the energy saving policy in place, in the mid 70s, the consumption of oil plateaued and even decreased.
